The KT Extinction (65,000,000 years ago)
This is the extinction that killed off most of the dinosaurs and allowed mammals to become the new dominant land animals. Some interesting evidence for this event is a layer of a rare form of an element called spiked iridium. In the rock record, there is a thin layer of bedrock dating to 65 million years ago that has amounts of spiked iridium too high for natural earth deposits but commonly found in asteroids.
